Black & White between London-Sound and Rio Rhythm – each track a real hit. Carlos Fendeira mixes Soul, Beat and Jazz with a good deal of sharp and burning South American fire water. The musical arrangement and the recording technique could not possibly be more exquisite. Ann Helstone (19) became known through her great success in the Munich performance of the Musical “Hair”, and on the present LP for the first time is given the chance to demonstrate her fiery southern temperament. Daniela Milatovic (18) continues her career begun with a set of Singles and an LP. For the first time the young singers join forces with the instrumental wonderland of Carlos Fendeira to present their Samba-Soul-Beat in Black & White.
This terribly rare album on the German “Orange” label is a stunning production of Latin & Brazilian sounds from Europe. It features unusual arrangements by Erich Ferstl for a so called “Orchester Carlos Fendeira”, not only including guitar and sitar work by the legendary Siegfried Schwab, but contributions from well known names like Olaf Kuebler, Dusko Goykovich, Claudio Szenkar and many others. It has brilliant arrangements and instrumenation throughout, with heavy Samba and Bossa Nova beats, topped by the chrystal clear voices of two unknown singers.
To get an idea how this excellent Wewerka production was invented, think of the Brazilian hits by Sergio Mendes, the swinging sitar beats and the psychedelic tunes from London, or of George Duke`s “Third Wave”-album with the exotic vocal work by some unknown female Philippine singers. When the UK beat groups of the 60s conquered the music world by storm, Bossa Nova was the new wave. It was a new sound, that got promotion all over the world and was successfully mixed with contemporary pop music. Back then Latin pop had its first strong sales in the international markets.
Producer Hans Wewerka made several thousand recordings and is not able to remember all the details about this particular recording session. But here is how the story goes: Erich Ferstl, appearing under the pseudonym Carlos Fendeira, earned himself a contract with producer Hans Wewerka to record several latin music tunes with some of the best jazz musicians from the late 60s Munich scene. The recordings were made under the working title “The Wonderland of Carlos Fendeira” for Wewerka`s music publishing “Edition Modern” and for radio airplay only.
Most of the Samba, Soul Pop and Bossa Nova tunes for this session were written by Dusko Goykovich, Lothar Meid and mysterious composers like Sid Sidney or Dave Pearl, with a nice cover version of Luiz Bonfa`s “Samba D`Orphée” in between. Then somebody came up with the idea to feature additional vocalists and release an album on Hans Wewerka`s “Orange” label with the intention to capitalize on the beat- and latin pop-craze of the times. This was the reason why the relatively unknown singers Daniela Milatovic and Ann Helstone suddenly appeared on the scene.
The entire 17-piece ensemble recorded a vocal and an instrumental version of the album and while the vocal album was regularly released via “Orange Records” in small amounts, the instrumental versions of the songs disappeared in the huge music library archives. The jazz musicians Kurt Kuempel (flute) and Hans Wolf (tenor- and alto-sax, bassoon) played the missing vocal melodies on the instrumental tapes. Two instrumental tunes have been added to this 1st album reissue as some unreleased bonus tracks.
The ensemble never made live shows, did not receive any press releases or special promotion work, so that the small edition of vinyl albums vanished immediately from the shops and fell into oblivion. The idea for a re-release of this album was born, when music producer and collector Hans-Peter Eckardt played out the album to a completely surprised Sonorama staff, to whom this rare German production was completely unknown. The next thing was to confront Hans Wewerka with a request for re-release. Our thanks go to Musikverlage Hans Wewerka for their permission to let us revive these beautiful sounds, that were produced but immediately forgotten by its originators nearly 40 years ago.
